Terra Mater Altar seeks to respect and honour the landscape of prehistory, present day and future, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own sacred relationship with terra mater.

Terra Mater Altar

Altar with reredos of natural wild plants and flowers, offerings placed on alder leaves, cut red felt evoking the intimate bond between femininity and blood, candles, sedge and clay terra mater figure.

Material: muslin, sedge, alder, willow, giant ragwort, oak, field maple, muslin, peat, embroidery thread, felt, clay, oats, burnt sedge, flour, wire, candles.

Altar offerings

Placed on alder leaves and inspired by Hebrew Levitical cultural offerings.

Clay ball – peace offering to symbolise the earth. 

Clay and peat beads – guilt offering to atone for the neglect of the earth.

Oats – offering of thanks to mother earth for growing food.

Burnt Sedge - offering of sorrow for past practices of destroying the peatlands.

Flour – sin offering, to ask for forgiveness of the evil inflicted on the earth.

Material: clay, clay and peat beads, oats, burnt sedge, flour, alder leaves.
