Inspired by the human relationship with the landscape; past, present and future, this body of work navigates relationships with the peatlands, vast ancient spaces that gently capture one third of the earth’s carbon. I also reflect on the circle, universal and symbolic, found throughout history and prehistory, adopted by humans across different times and places, its presence signifies unity, infinity, mystery, ritual and the cyclical nature of life.
Through creative practice I explore my relationship with the peatlands of Somerset and the Iron Age Glastonbury Lake Village, inquisitive about what went before, I work with natural elements, paper and textile to create artefacts that seek to honour and highlight the sacredness of place.
Ceremony and ritual, both ancient and contemporary contribute towards the work, through this I invite the audience into a reflective space to contemplate and pause on the potential of the earth to heal and restore. By recognising the feminine earth mother, I explore the spiritual mystery of the continuous cyclical rhythms of birth, life and death that exist beyond time and place.
By unifying research and practice I observe the relations between ecological repair, prehistoric ritual, spiritual mystery and femininity. I bring to light the ongoing work to restore the ancient peatlands and the efforts to return the landscape back to ecological friend and carbon capturer.
